Hong Kong archeology
Life is transition. Everything flows. And with flow comes change. In our surroundings transitions seem to always manifest themselves in layers.
Photographing the city makes me feel like an archeologist. Looking for subtle changes in the composition of the soil, the archeologist tracks transitions in time leading to new findings. Walking the city can be a similar experience, looking for subtle changes in composition – not of the soil but of the city’s texture. I don’t dig with a shovel, but I do descend and go deeper.
Hong Kong shows its transitions, tightly packed on top of each other, next to each other, intertwined. In Hong Kong finding layers in time is a strange journey. The city defies the usual patterns and rules. On this journey, it seems to lead you to the core, the obscure heart hiding itself in alleys, backways and dim corners. Here things quiet down, the old is left behind – or left in peace. Here pipes exhaust, cables run and garbage is left. Here people leave their marks unseen.
It is this obscure heart of Hong Kong that offers a view of the city in all its transitional richness, from the inside out.
